Our MunicipalityThe Assiniboine serves not only the agricultural industry, but also the tourism industry. The rivers banks have given the province its largest tree, a 115 foot plains cottonwood 18 kms southwest of Portage la Prairie. Fort la Reine MuseumThe Fort la Reine Museum is one of the visitor highlights of the area. It was set up in 1967 to commemorate Canada's Centennial and to preserve the history of the region. Today, it is home to the only Allis Chalmers museum collection in Canada. For more information, click here. CampingThe Rural Municipality has many campgrounds for families and vacationers; Delta Beach Campground; Portage la Prairie Campground; Millers Camping Resort; TJs Landing Camping Park; St. Ambroise Provincial Recreation Park and Delta Beach are all within a short radius. Delta BeachThe Delta Beach area is one of the highlights of the tourism attractions in the municipality. Delta Beach includes cottages, a public beach, campground and other facilities. Delta MarshThe Delta Marsh is located at the southern tip of Lake Manitoba, the seventeenth largest freshwater lake in the world. The Marsh is one of the best known large natural wetlands in North America and is the most prominent waterfowl area in the Northern Great Plains. The most spectacular aspect of the marsh is the breeding, staging and moulting waterfowl. This spectacle has attracted visitors from around the world. The North American Wildlife Foundation and the University of Manitoba both maintain research facilities at the Marsh. East of Delta, around St. Ambroise, much of the Delta Marsh is a Public Shooting Ground, with some of the best waterfowl hunting in North America. Spillway ParkThe Portage Spillway Wayside Park, 1 km. South of the Portage by-pass, is a day-use area for fishermen with particularly special facilities for wheelchair bound individuals. The SandhillsThe Portage Sandhills provide many acres of undisturbed land. They can be enjoyed by hunters, cross country skiers or those who just wish to enjoy nature and its wildlife. Historic ChurchSt. Annes Anglican Church near Poplar Point of Highway #26 was completed around 1864 and is one of the oldest log churches in continuous use in Western Canada. Poplar Point and District Memorial RinkBuilt in 1949, this rink has been designated a historic place by the federal government. |
